It’s been a great year for Nicholas Galitzine so far.

His career so far has been incredibly successful, especially considering he’s not even 30, but starring in a movie with Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway clearly means he’s reached a new stage of his career.

The Idea of You star recently opened up a little about his personal life and how the characters he plays influence it.

He spoke candidly about his sexuality, playing queer characters, and how intimate scenes can be more useful in film than people realize.

Nicholas Galitzine About His Sexuality

For a while now, there has been speculation about Nicholas Galitzine’s sexuality. Not that it’s anyone else’s business, of course, but fans have wondered, mostly due to the famous queer roles he’s dazzled our screens with.

In a recent interview with GQ, the actor warned fans not to take his characters so seriously. “I am Nick, and I’m not my role,” he stated. Nonetheless, he said he knows people find it hard to separate the two of them somehow. Some of his most famous characters are queer, including his roles in the movie Red, White & Royal Blue and the miniseries Mary & George.

About his sexuality, Nicholas Galitzine said “I identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some incredible queer stories,” and he’s grateful for them.

Despite enjoying them, however, he sometimes feels a little guilty for portraying them while not being part of the LGBT community. “I felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I’m taking up someone’s space, and perhaps guilt.”

Still, he understands it’s something he has to get over. “At the same time, I see those characters as not solely their sexuality,” he added.

Although he doesn’t seem that bothered by people speculating about his sexuality, he would like fans to understand that, despite his roles being predominantly risqué, he has a lot of different facets as an actor, and even those parts where sex is an important part of the character are rich in other ways. The perfect example for him is his latest movie, The Idea of You, he stars alongside Anne Hathaway.

“Certain people might just see this as a smutty movie they’re gonna get titillated by for a couple hours, and I think it’s so much more than that,” he explained. “The amount of people who have come up to me and said, ‘I had my reservations, but it completely surprised me,’ or ‘It has an immense depth to it, as well as just being a lot of fun.'”

He admitted that his roles have skewed his perception of intimate scenes on screen, though, and joked about how Saltburn seemed too intense for most people, but not to him.

“You know, clearly Mary & George f***ed me up, because I thought they were very normal.” he laughed.

Still, he reaffirms his belief that, when done thoughtfully, sex scenes can be great resources. “I think you can gain a lot of insight into [characters] at their most primal, their most emotionally and physically vulnerable. So, yeah, I’m all for the sex scene.”
