Zayn Malik’s fans were delighted earlier this month when he announced a return to music after years of taking a step back from the spotlight to focus on his physical.
And mental health.
Now, the singer is opening up about how he got his well-being on the right track, admitting he got sick of struggling with his anxiety and depression.
“It’s not as much of a struggle. It’s been a development over the last years for me. I just got sick of just feeling like there was a cloud over my head,” Zayn said while speaking to US radio host Zach Sang.
Zayn Admits His Mental Health Ruined His Time With One Direction
He also reflected on his time with One Direction, admitting he believes his mental health challenges took away from his experience with the band. “The main thing that I always feel bad about when I look back over my life is not enjoying the band enough,” he explained.
“I feel like I just took things too seriously and I’m grateful that I’m able to be happier now,” Zayn continued. “I had this teen angst thing going on, a chip on my shoulder where I’m like, ‘It’s really cool to just be moody as f*** all the time.’”
Zayn shocked the world in 2015 when he announced his departure from One Direction after being with the band for five years. His decision to leave was reportedly due to the pressures of fame and his hope to pursue a solo career, as well as a desire for more privacy and autonomy.
“I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart,” he said at the time. “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”
Zayn Announced His Return To Music This Month
Following his departure, Zayn embarked on a successful solo career, releasing hit singles and albums, though he’s taken a step back until recently to prioritize his well-being. But Zayn just announced fans can expect new music and performances starting this year.
Taking to social media at the beginning of the month, Zayn announced he’ll be gracing the stage for a one-night-only live performance in London. This marks the break of an eight-year hiatus from live performances since his departure from One Direction.
The news follows closely on the heels of the revelation of his surprise album drop, Room Under the Stairs, which delighted fans on March 13 and is scheduled for release on May 17, coinciding with his London show.
The event is set to take place at the iconic 02 Shepherds Bush Empire, offering an intimate setting for just 2,000 attendees. Malik is expected to treat the audience to six songs and debut his new documentary, Road Back to the Mic, signaling his comeback to the music scene. With rumors swirling about a potential tour announcement, Zayn’s return to the spotlight has been eagerly anticipated by fans, who’re also thrilled to see his mental health in a better place.
