David Copperfield’s career may be officially over, as many fans react with shock and disgust at the allegations brought forth by 16 women who claim he was sexually inappropriate with them.
In a recent investigative article published by the Guardian, the allegations stretch back over a span of three decades, starting in the late 1980s and extending to 2014.
One of the main accusations is that the magician “drugged three women before he had sexual relations with them, which they felt they were unable to consent to.”
Copperfield Is Accused Of Drugging Minors
Additionally, some of the victims were as young as 15 when they encountered Copperfield.
One woman, referred to as Gillian in the piece, alleges being drugged and before she says David sexually assaulted her. “I … would never just say this to somebody if I didn’t truly, honest to God believe that I was drugged at that time,” she said.
In response to the allegations, Copperfield has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. His legal representatives stated to the Guardian that he “never acted inappropriately with anyone, let alone anyone underage,” and also denied claims that he’s drugged women.
Copperfield Strongly Denies The Allegations
Copperfield’s team further released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, denying all the allegations. “Everyone that knows David Copperfield will tell you that these recent allegations from one newspaper are the exact opposite of who David is,” his rep said.
“In fact, David has a record of risking his career to help protect women from powerful predators. Most of these historic accusations have been made before, and all of them are as false now as they were then,” it continued.
“David requested the ‘evidence’ upon which these false allegations claim to rely and this has not been provided. By contrast, whenever US law enforcement has looked into such matters, they have been investigated thoroughly and it has been found that there is simply no case to answer,” the statement went on. “The Guardian’s characterization is not who David is, and he continues to support anyone who has experienced any form of abuse or discrimination.”
It concluded, “The movement must succeed, but false accusations must stop for it to flourish. David will be considering the position with his legal team and will take such steps as may be appropriate over these false and scurrilous allegations.”
For now, it’s unclear if charges will be pursued, or if Copperfield plans to take legal action against the Guardian.
