Throughout his career, Matt Damon has worked alongside some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.
In 2011 alone, Damon had two of the top co-stars in the industry, working back-to-back alongside Emily Blunt and Scarlett Johansson.
Not only did Damon star alongside the actresses, but he also kissed both of them.
As it turns out, both kisses turned out to be quite different.
Let’s recap the details of both scenes, and how John Krasinski was awkwardly involved in Damon’s kiss with Emily Blunt in The Adjustment Bureau. But for starters, let’s recap Damon’s scene with Scarlett Johansson, and why it all went wrong for the two stars looking back.
Matt Damon’s Kiss With Scarlett Johansson Wasn’t What The Actor Expected Due To Her Lunch Choice
Back in 2011, Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson played the roles of Benjamin Mee and Kelly Foster in the film, We Bought a Zoo. Critical scores for the family comedy were positive, while the box office return was also noteworthy, bringing in $120 million.
What wasn’t as noteworthy, was a kissing scene between Scarlett Johansson and Matt Damon. Looking back at the scene, Damon explained why kissing Johansson turned into “hell.”Both stars were under the impression that the scene was done with. Therefore, Scarlett did not hesitate with her lunch choice, choosing a meal that also contained onions. We all know what happens next… a reshoot is scheduled and the two stars need to redo the scene.
Damon recalls, “I had to kiss Scarlett [Johansson] — had to kiss. Can you imagine how horrible that was for me? But we did. It was hell, ok? What happened was we did a shot before lunch, and it was like this nice little two-shot that ended in the kiss. And it was really good. And we went to lunch, and she and I both thought it was over. She ate like an onion sandwich for lunch.”
Credit to Damon’s co-star, who was completely honest during the reshoot.
Damon adds, “Cameron Crowe had set the camera up, and it was like a tight shot of the kiss. And she goes, ‘Oh shit.’ She goes, ‘I literally just had like an onion sandwich. I thought we did this.'”
I think fans can all agree, nobody is feeling sorry for Damon, whether onions were involved or not…
Major edits were made to We Bought a Zoo in order for the film to avoid a PG-13 rating. For family audiences, language and sexual content was removed.
Although the scene wasn’t what Damone expected, we guarantee he’d do it over again compared to the situation he faced with Emily Blunt following their memorable kiss…
Matt Damon’s Kiss With Emily Blunt Was Fine, But He Was Completely Embarrassed After The Scene
Released in 2011, the same year, Matt Damon had another notable co-star, Emily Blunt. The film The Adjustment Bureau once again solidified Matt Damon’s status on top of Hollywood. The thriller received positive reviews, while generating $127.8 million at the box office.
John Krasinski is involved in this story, unfortunately… John was a huge Matt Damon fan growing up, given his contributions on Good Will Hunting. However, Krasinski picked an awkward time to meet Damon on-set. The encounter took place following a kiss between Damon and Emily Blunt. The kiss was completely fine. Matt just managed to make things very awkward, making an inappropriate comment he likely wishes he could have taken back. Damon made a weird joke the first time meeting John Krasinski.
“And so I get up there, and this PA yells, ‘We’re rolling!’ And he throws me into this black tent and I get this close to the screen. And it’s just Matt and my wife kissing very deeply,” Krasinski reveals.
“I thought, ‘That’s very awkward.’ So then I go out, and I’m like, ‘Hey, Emily, great seeing you blah blah blah.’ And Matt Damon came up, and he was just trying to make a joke, and instead he goes, ‘Hey, nice to meet you, I was just totally tonguing your girl.’”
At that point, given John’s reaction, Damon knew he had messed up.
“And I looked at him and I went, ‘OK, man,’” Krasinski said. “And he just started to melt and he went, ‘I’m so sorry, that wasn’t funny at all. I’m so sorry.’ And to this day, he can’t get over the fact that that’s the first thing he said to me.”
Don’t feel too sorry, as the duo turned out to be completely fine. Just a year later, Matt Damon and John Krasinski starred together in the film, Promised Land.
Emily Blunt Also Had Had Problematic Kissing Scenes Throughout Her Career
We are not quite sure where Blunt’s kiss with Matt Damon ranks for her. However, we do know that Blunt has had some difficult kissing scenes in the past. She didn’t name specific names, but Blunt said some of her co-stars made her want to be sick.
“I wouldn’t say it’s extreme loathing, but I’ve definitely not enjoyed some of it,” Blunt tells Howard Stern.
Blunt says the key to any intimate scene is having the proper chemistry with an actor, “I’ve been doing this long enough. I could have chemistry with this water bottle at this point. You know how to conjure it. But it’s just easier when you have a natural rapport with someone.”
Blunt added some of her kissing scenes “were that bad,” even in terms of the recent times.
