Fans have seen this in the past, Stephen Colbert doing the impossible, and securing guests fans thought they’d never see.
He did the impossible by getting one of the biggest names in Hollywood, Steven Spielberg.
Shockingly, it was the filmmaker’s first appearance on a late night program.
However, Donald Trump might’ve been an even bigger surprise, especially given Colbert’s constant slander of the former President leading up to their interview eight years ago.
It wasn’t the best experience for Colbert looking back. The host admits his one-time guest wasn’t necessarily honest, and was completely different behind the scenes. Let’s recap what Colbert had to say, and his problematic history with Donald Trump, one that almost cost him his job.
It is no secret but now, Stephen Colbert wasn’t exactly fond of his one-time only interview with Donald Trump eight years ago, before he became President. Speaking alongside Watch What Happens Live, Colbert was asked by Andy Cohen, which former President was the best at avoiding questions. Without thinking twice, Colbert responded Trump, and it came with quite the explanation.
“He didn’t even make eye contact — he sat there like a bad school boy being lectured.”
On the flip side, Colbert called former President Joe Biden the nicest, especially when it came to dealing with his staff backstage.
“He called my in laws and left a message saying how beautiful my wife is,” Colbert said of Biden.
Colbert’s interview with Trump did get a lot of interest. It became one of his most-watched interview on YouTube, with over 17 million views. Still, that isn’t enough to bring Trump back to the show. Colbert admitted he did it once, but won’t do it again. He also said Trump was the complete opposite off-camera.
“I did once. I wouldn’t want to anymore,” Colbert said. “He was actually kind of disappointing. He played ‘the reasonable man.’ He’s always kinda in persona mode. Sometimes he plays, like, the ‘rallying populist’ and other times he plays the ‘reasonable man.”
Colbert adds, “Backstage, he’s just like some guy you might meet at a club. I mean ‘country club,’ not like disco. He’s very clubbish and he’s kind of innocuous in a way. There’s nothing particularly remarkable about him.”
Stephen Colbert revealed Donald Trump was quiet and reserved backstage prior to their 2016 interview.
Although Trump and Colbert won’t ever reunite, it is still so surreal to look back at their interview. Colbert does have a few regrets, admitting he went easy on the former President.
Since Trump came into power, Colbert and other late night show hosts have been relentless in ripping the former President apart. For that reason, it was shocking to see Colbert with a somber message about Donald Trump following the shooting. Colbert felt grief for the country, while admitting things needed to change.
He said during his memorable monologue, “My immediate reaction when I saw this on Saturday were horror at what was unfolding, relief that Donald Trump had lived, and frankly, grief for my beautiful country.”
“In the wake of this attack on Saturday, many Americans on both sides of the aisle — from President Biden to Speaker Johnson — are calling on all of us to change how we see each other, how we treat each other, how we talk to each other.”
Colbert added that he was open to looking at different sides of political ideas, and issues.
“This week, we’re going to do our best to talk about those ideas, the people who represent those ideas, and many other things with guests, and who knows, if we’re lucky, maybe some fart jokes.”
Despite the monologue, Colbert hasn’t really supported Donald Trump during recent episodes, and the same clearly holds true with his latest guests. Fans can expect this type of theme to continue with elections looming closer.
Bernie Sanders was recently a guest with Stephen Colbert, and took issue with Donald Trump as the possible future President.
Getting in trouble over a Donald Trump joke was extremely common during his run in power. The likes of Jimmy Kimmel almost stepped down after ABC advised him to tone down his comedy regarding the former President. As for Stephen Colbert, he landed in hot water over a homophobic Trump joke. Although CBS refused to comment, the word was that Colbert’s joke was poorly received.
“You have more people marching against you than cancer. You talk like a sign language gorilla that got hit in the head. In fact, the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c–- holster.”
Stephen Colbert’s current net worth stands at $75 million.
#FireColbert was trending on X that same night following his controversial 2017 joke. It didn’t lead to much. On the flip side, Trump has been critical of Colbert in the past, calling him a “no-talent guy.” Trump went on to state that Colbert stayed relevant due to his rare appearance on the show.
