Besides acting, Christopher enjoyed hobbies like horse riding and occasionally competed in equestrian events. On May 27, 1995, while participating in a competition, he faced a life-changing accident. During a roadblock test, he tried to complete a triple-pole jump on his horse, Buck. As they approached the jump, Buck stopped suddenly, throwing Christopher headfirst into the barrier.
The accident left Christopher Reeve paralyzed from the neck down, and he had to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life. At the time, he was just 42 years old and had a young son with his wife. Doctors told him he would never be able to move again.
When the accident happened, his son was still under three years old. Despite the challenges, his wife, Dana, dedicated herself to caring for both her husband and their son. Christopher often expressed his gratitude for Dana’s support during this tough period.
While Christopher was in the hospital, he enjoyed visits from his wife and son, even when he was still sedated. Later, when he was more awake, he liked watching his son climb a tree repeatedly because it shifted the focus away from his own condition.
How Did Christopher Predict His Death and Spend His Last Day with Will?
Although Christopher’s injuries prevented him from doing much with his son, he felt his death was approaching. He spent his last day focusing on his son Will and doing whatever little Will wanted.
Christopher Reeve attended his son Will’s hockey game on a Saturday morning, as he tried to be at all of Will’s sporting events. After the game, they went home to watch baseball together. Later that night, Christopher’s health declined.
He was at home in his New York City apartment when he went into cardiac arrest. He fell into a coma and never woke up. Christopher passed away on Sunday at 5:30 p.m., and his death was described as “sudden.”
Will Reeve was only eleven years old when his father, Christopher, passed away. After losing his father, Will and his mother were left alone. Just a few months later, they faced another tragedy.
How Did Will Become an Orphan at 13?
Ten months after Christopher’s death, Dana, Will’s mother, announced she was battling lung cancer. She said at the time:
“Now, more than ever, I feel Chris with me as I face this challenge. As always, I look to him as an example of strength, courage, and hope in difficult times.”
Dana Reeve, at a press conference for the Christopher Reeve Foundation in 2005, spoke about how her husband’s determination inspired her to face her cancer diagnosis. She used his strength to help her through the tough times and support her young son.
Unfortunately, just seven months after sharing her diagnosis, Dana passed away from cancer at the age of 44. Will was only thirteen when he lost his mother and became an orphan.
After his mother died, Will Reeve moved in with a childhood friend and his family. Although he had two half-siblings from his father’s previous relationship, Dana wanted Will to stay in Bedford, New York, so she made sure everything was arranged before her death.

After graduating from Middlebury College, Will Reeve interned at “Good Morning America.” He then got a job at ESPN’s “SportsCenter” and has been a correspondent for ABC News since 2018.
