Royal fans fume new Princess Diana documentary is ‘scraping the barrel’

Royal fans are divided over a new feature-length documentary about Princess Diana – with some claiming the 90-minute special is “scraping the barrel”.

Dancing With Diana has been earmarked for production by Canadian film and TV producers Sphere Media.

Based on the memoir by Scottish-Canadian dancer Anne Allan, who taught the Princess of Wales in secret, the rights have now been secured for adaptation into a TV special.

Anne co-choreographed Diana’s iconic dance routine to Uptown Girl at Covent Garden for the royal after teaching her in secret for nine years.

Just weeks after Diana married King Charles in 1981, she called ballet teacher Allan and asked for private lessons.

Anne told People magazine that she was all ready to refer to the princess as “Your Royal Highness”, greetig her with a curtsy and flowers, but was simply told: “Please call me Diana.”

Her memoir will be adapted by Sphere and Glasgow-based production company Two Rivers Media for a 90-minute special.

A synopsis promises: “The documentary will chronicle the nine-year period from early 1981 when Allan served as Princess Diana’s private – and top secret – dance teacher.”

Though some fans were excited about the news, others were baffled, with one writing on Instagram: “Don’t get me wrong I love and respect Diana but is this scraping the barrel?”

Another echoed: “What’s next, her secret manicurist and percussionist who taught her how to sing Cups?” As a third begged: “Let that lady rest!”

Others were more enthusiastic about the project, with one writing: “I’ll watch this. Diana’s life was tragically short but her legacy is long and powerful.”

As another gushed: “Where can I watch this?”
