As Prince William and Princess Catherine navigate royal life, they strive to maintain a sense of normalcy for their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
However, the dynamics within the royal family may shift dramatically once Prince William ascends to the throne, potentially leaving Charlotte without a title or clear purpose within the House of Windsor.
Currently, if Prince George were to have children in the future, they would automatically inherit the title of His Royal Highness, Prince or Princess.
In contrast, Charlotte’s situation is less certain. Experts have noted that Charlotte’s title could be affected when her father becomes king, as royal titles traditionally pass through sons rather than daughters.
Celebrity broadcaster Ossa recently highlighted that Charlotte’s future could change significantly upon her father’s accession. With George set to become the Prince of Wales, Charlotte’s title as Princess of Wales could be at risk. According to royal etiquette expert Deb Lucy Hume, a royal lady can only hold the title of princess if she is married to a prince or is the daughter of a prince. As George’s sister, Charlotte does not meet these criteria when her brother becomes Prince of Wales.
Historically, royal titles have been inherited through male lineage, meaning that any children Charlotte might have would not automatically receive royal titles. However, the reigning monarch has the discretion to bestow titles upon the children of princesses, as demonstrated by previous royal families. For instance, Queen Elizabeth offered titles to the children of Peter and Zara Phillips, although they declined.
