What a road it has been for Celine Dion.
She went from looking fragile, while showing fans her darkest moments in her documentary, to performing on the biggest stage at the Olympic Games.
It has been a roller coaster of emotions for Dion, who continues to push forward at this point in her career. Truly motivating for anyone looking from afar.
Her recent performance at the Olympics did stir up conversation, which was initiated by TMZ. The media outlet reported on her extreme pay for one song.
On the flip side, Olympic committee members completely shot the number down, calling it false news. Let’s take a look at what both sides are saying, and how Celine Dion felt about the performance.
Rumors Claim Celine Dion Made $2 Million To Sing One Song, But Olympic Organizers Revealed She Wasn’t Paid Anything
Initially reported by TMZ, the outlet revealed that Celine Dion was making a bundle for the opening ceremony at the Olympics. The figure was set to be at $2 million for just one song. Although the number is staggering, it really isn’t hard to believe, especially given how massive the Olympic stage is, and all the sponsors involved. However, Olympic organizers added confusion to TMZ’s release, stating Dion wasn’t making anything, and neither was Lady Gaga.
The statement reads, “Contrary to some media reports, the music artists who will be appearing at the Paris 2024 Games Ceremonies will not be paid a fee for their services. Their decision to perform under these conditions reflects their desire to be part of a historic event for France, and for the world of sports.”
However, Paris was covering the technical and production costs for performances.
“In addition, Paris 2024 will cover all technical production and performance organization costs, as is customary. Paris 2024 would like to point out that 96 percent of the Organising Committee’s budget is funded by private revenues and that no public contributions are used to pay the artistic teams.”
Celine Dion’s net worth is valued at $800 million.
Despite the confusion in pay, Dion was feeling gratitude for the moment. She wrote on her social media pages:
“I’m honored to have performed tonight, for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favorite cities! Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance.”
Truly a comeback for the ages, and fans are hoping to see more of the artist in the upcoming months.
Major Sporting Events Like The Super Bowl Don’t Pay Artists, But Benefits Are Made In Other Ways
Similar to what the Olympic committee revealed, other major sporting events like the Super Bowl don’t issue a pay towards their performers. However, there’s a reason behind why the NFL doesn’t pay. According to Country Living, sales for artists spike following a performance. J-Lo and Shakira saw a spike of over 1,013% following their 2020 act. Justin Timberlake also skyrocketed to number one album in 2018 following his Super Bowl performance.
Although Maroon 4 was criticized for their performance, the band saw a sales increase of 434%.
Viewership alone is a major reason for artists not to think twice about appearing at major events such as the Super Bowl and the Olympics. Although it comes with a lot of pressure and intense training, it can certainly be worth it in the end.
