The allegations against Sean “Diddy” Combs have come as a shock to many, and the recent video footage of his physical abuse of his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura was difficult to witness (the incident happened in 2016 when Ventura was dating Combs).

John Legend has now spoken about Combs’ behavior and the charges he faces.

Legend claimed he was “horrified by the allegations” and “by the video evidence that was released after that” in an interview with CNN International’s Christiane Amanpour.

“I was horrified by the descriptions that I read before the video evidence came out,” he explained. “And absolutely, it’s something that needs to be brought to light when it happens.”

Before the footage was released showing Sean “Diddy” Combs physically assaulting Cassie Ventura, he had denied her allegations. CNN notes that Cassie and Combs had settled out of court prior to the footage being released. Now, John Legend is sharing his thoughts on the accusations made against the Bad Boy for Life musician. “My default stance is to believe women when they make these accusations and to make sure that we do whatever we can to support women,” Legend said. He continued, highlighting the importance “that they’re heard and that any kind of accountability and reparations can be made to make these women whole again.”

In the same interview, Legend referred to the accusations against Combs as “shameful” and shared his well-wishes for Ventura and “for all the other victims that have alleged that he’s abused them.” He continued, “It’s quite a shame. I really just want accountability and hopefully some healing for all of his victims.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women and is facing eight civil lawsuits, CNN reports. He has since settled with Cassie Venturas (who had claimed she was raped by the rapper in 2018 and subjected to multiple incidents of abuse), and when the footage of his assault on her came to light, he took to Instagram to issue an apology.

“It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that,” Combs said in a video statement (via CNN) “I was f***ed up — I hit rock bottom — but I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable.” Interestingly, he had previously denied this assault took place. He continued: “I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I am disgusted. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now.” However, he maintains his innocence in the other civil cases.

Meredith Firetog, attorney for Venturas, released a statement in reaction to Combs’s video statement. “Combs’ most recent statement is more about himself than the many people he has hurt,” Firetog said. “When Cassie and multiple other women came forward, he denied everything and suggested that his victims were looking for a payday. That he was only compelled to ‘apologize’ once his repeated denials were proven false shows his pathetic desperation, and no one will be swayed by his disingenuous words.”
