Late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel took some time on the set of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? to provide an update on his son Billy’s health.
Although Jimmy is busy with the game show and his popular talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live!, his focus during a recent interview was squarely on Billy.
Billy recently underwent open-heart surgery for the third time, the first being when he was only three days old — and Billy also celebrated his seventh birthday somewhat recently.
Jimmy Went Viral When He First Disclosed His Son’s Condition
Jimmy Kimmel’s wit could be described as often acerbic, which makes his moments of emotional sincerity all the more resonant.
In early 2017, Jimmy became visibly emotional during a monologue, before tearfully disclosing that his then-newborn son had been diagnosed with a heart condition.
On May 1 of that year, ET reported:
“A few hours Kimmel’s son was born on April 21 [2017], a nurse noticed he was ‘purple’ and doctors diagnosed him with a heart defect. At three days old, Billy had open-heart surgery at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
“‘Six days after [Billy’s first] open-heart surgery, we got to bring him home, which was amazing,’ said Kimmel, revealing that Billy will have to have two more procedures on his heart later in life.
“‘He’s doing great. He’s eating, he’s sleeping. He peed on his mother today while she was changing his diaper. He’s doing all the things that he’s supposed to do.'”
At the time, Kimmel stated Billy’s first surgery was one of three procedures, and in December 2017, he brought his son to the set after the second procedure:
A description box for the video above explained that “Jimmy’s baby Billy had his second open-heart surgery” in late 2017, adding that “the surgery was a success.”
The host thanked “the bright and talented doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital LA,” and referenced “one more surgery when [Billy] is around six years old, and then he is good to go.”
Jimmy also leveraged the video’s popularity to call attention to other children in need, adding:
“However, the fight is not over for millions of children whose health is threatened right now because a program called CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program), that is there to protect them, is in serious need of funding because Congress recently failed to approve funding for it.
“This is not a partisan issue. Democrats and Republicans have always overwhelmingly supported it – until now. Now it’s being used as a bargaining chip. So Jimmy is encouraging everyone to call the House and Senate at (202) 225-3121 to tell them to take a break from tax cuts and fully fund CHIP now.”
Jimmy Said Billy’s Third Open-Heart Surgery Was A Success
Before turning to Billy’s recent surgery, Jimmy spoke to ET about balancing his busy career with his family, quipping: “Yeah you know what I do, I just cut out all the family time, I ignore my children.”
Kimmel’s sarcasm in that statement was clear as he began to talk about Billy’s recovery, and he began:
“Billy’s doing great. He had open-heart surgery; you know he’s got the scars and everything, but he’s just mentally right back where he was, which is crazy. Physically, you know, we’re gonna have to be careful with him for a couple of months, but he’s doing really well.”
Jimmy added that doctors credited children’s “resilience” for Billy’s recovery, adding:
“[Kids are] made of rubber, you know, everybody says that kids are so resilient and the doctors actually explained it to me, which I don’t know why it never occurred to me before, [their physical resilience is] because they’re still growing.”
On May 27th, Jimmy shared a photograph of Billy in the hospital on Instagram, remarking: “We went into this experience with a lot of optimism and nearly as much fear and came out with a new valve inside a happy, healthy kid.”
