It’s not a common occurrence for a rock star to nurture a marriage for over 30 years old, but Jon Bon Jovi and his wife Dorothea are one of the exceptions.

Jon Bon Jovi has, for the most part, managed to stay away from the “sex, drugs, and rock & roll” cliché, and has always kept a mostly clean lifestyle, but now, as he approaches his 35th wedding anniversary, he opened up about the mistakes he made with his wife.

In a recent interview, he admitted that he “hasn’t been a saint”, especially during the heyday of his fame, but that he and Dorothea have always been open with each other and managed to work through their issues.

Even the things the rock star admits were horrible mistakes.

Recently, the rock star spoke candidly with The Independent about his loving relationship with Dorothea, who he married back in 1989, and who was his high school sweetheart. He called their marriage “a mutual admiration society,” and credited their longevity to “being lucky enough to have grown up together.”

He also referred to the mistakes he made through the years, and admitted he messed up a lot. The interview brought up his iconic song “Bed of Roses”, which talked about regretting being unfaithful.

“Sitting here wasted and wounded / With this old piano / Trying hard to capture / The moment this morning I don’t know / ‘Cause a bottle of vodka / Still lodged in my head / And some blonde gave me nightmares / Think that she’s still in my bed,” the lyrics read.

“These are all the wonderful clichés of rock stardom,” Jon Bon Jovi admitted. Still, he said they were always able to work through their issues because they were always honest with each other, even when it hurt. “It’s about never lying about having been a saint, but not being a fool enough to f**k up the home life, either.”

It’s not the first time Jon Bon Jovi and Dorothea have spoken about their marriage, as it usually catches people’s attention when a rock star chooses to settle down instead of playing the field. It’s clear the couple really love each other, and despite their ups and downs, they managed to make things work for almost 35 years.

Dorothea was asked about how she deals with her husband’s fame and the attention he gets from female fans, but despite Jon’s admitted slip-ups, she’s not a jealous person. “I think it’s great they love the music,” she said to PEOPLE about the fans swarming Jon Bon Jovi. “They love the band and are so loyal.”

The rock star said in the same interview that he couldn’t have gotten this far without Dorothea. “She’s the glue,” he stated. “I’m the crazy visionary with all kinds of things flying, and the seams are all splitting. She’s the one following me with the glue and the thread and needle, keeping it all together.”

All marriages have their ups and downs, especially when there’s fame involved, but it’s clear the Bongiovi marriage was made to last.
