The duchess then further found herself in controversy over a Mother’s Day photo she shared, which led to Photoshop allegations and required an apology from Kate.

Following her cancer diagnosis, Kate seemed to want to suggest it was business as usual over Mother’s Day in the U.K. by sharing a new portrait of her family to commemorate the day. It was the first photo shared of her since the abdominal surgery, apparently taken by William in Windsor, a statement from Kensington Palace reveal.

While the image was shared by many new agencies (including the Associated Press and Reuters), it was retracted by most by the end of the day , saying the image had been “manipulated.”

The Associated Press released a statement explaining why they retracted it, explaining, “The Associated Press initially published the photo, which was issued by Kensington Palace. The AP later retracted the image because at closer inspection, it appears that the source had manipulated the image in a way that did not meet AP’s photo standards.”

It added, The photo shows an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand.”

The photo showed Kate with her three kids alongside a sweet caption on Instagram, Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day.”

However, the image now has an “altered photo/video” warning on Instagram that users have to acknowledge before they can see it.

The accusations of photoshop were significant, given all the speculation around Kate’s health and whereabouts, with theories suggesting the palace was covering up a serious health crisis , which was seemingly confirmed when Kate revealed she was undergoing treatment for cancer.

The day after the photoshop controversy Kate released a statement saying that she did edit the photo, but only because she’s been experimenting with photography.

“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C,” she wrote via Kensington Palace’s X (formerly Twitter) account.
