Katy is currently working on her sixth studio album, but her latest song, “Woman’s World,” has faced a backlash from her fans after a snippet was leaked on Monday.
After a preview of her new track surfaced online, Katy soon shared a teaser on TikTok.
In the video, the singer can be seen dancing in a white crochet bikini, lip-syncing to the lyrics, “Sexy, confident. So intelligent. She is heaven-sent. So soft, so strong.”
She revealed that the full song will drop on July 11, encouraging her followers with, “GET READY TO POP OFF.”
Katy’s New Song Disappointed Her Fans
However, the initial reception to Katy’s new material has been less than enthusiastic. Critics have labeled the snippet as “terrible” and “cringy.” One user on X, formerly known as Twitter, commented, “The new snippet of Katy Perry’s latest single sounds like an autotuned Real Housewife release so kinda terrible and kinda camp.”
Another added, “I was rooting for Katy but these lyrics are so dated it’s giving 2016 Hillary Clinton presidential campaign material. It’s over.”
Additional negative feedback included, “New Katy Perry snippet is the worst thing I’ve ever heard,” and, “I cannot be the only one cringing at the title of the upcoming new Katy Perry song and then hearing the lyrics in the snippet and cringing even harder.” Another disgruntled fan said, “It’s SO BAD. And I was GAGGED with the single cover.”
The controversy didn’t stop there, as some fans expressed their disapproval over rumors that Katy collaborated with producer Dr. Luke on the song and the album. “The irony of having a song praising women but you’re working with Dr. Luke? Katy Perry I didn’t expect this from you,” one fan remarked.
This reaction stems from past accusations against Dr. Luke, whom Kesha accused of sexual assault—a legal battle that concluded in 2023 with a settlement.
Kesha even seemed to diss Katy’s new song as the backlash grew online. Following the leak, Kesha posted a cryptic “lol” on X, leading some fans to speculate that she was subtly shading Perry.
Katy Quit American Idol To Focus On Her Music
Katy’s new single may have left many unimpressed, but it seems like the pp star is refocusing her career to pivot to her music, as she announced earlier this year she’s leaving her long-time role on American Idol. While many theories are floating around suggesting who’ll replace her, Katy has said she thinks Jelly Roll would be a good fit.
One person who won’t be stepping into the role is Kelly Clarkson. Despite winning the first season of American Idol, Kelly has shot down rumors she’d return as a judge, saying she’s too busy with her judging role on The Voice and her talk show.
