Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly gone from being a supportive co-star to Margot Robbie to seeing her as competition, as he’s apparently threatened by the success she’s found since the release of Barbie last year.
“Margot went from being Leo’s discovery and prodigy 10 years ago in The Wolf of Wall Street to being his biggest direct competition in 2023 and the irony isn’t lost on him,” a source claimed to Life & Style.
“As great as Barbie has been for the whole industry with getting people back to movie theaters, that’s not the kind of movie Leo likes to make. He thought it was massively overrated.”
Why Leonardo Is Angry ‘Barbie’ Was So Successfu
Leo and Margot have worked together professionally in two major films. Their first collaboration was in the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, directed by Martin Scorsese. In this film, DiCaprio portrayed the lead role of Jordan Belfort, a stockbroker embroiled in corruption and fraud, while Robbie played his wife, Naomi Lapaglia.
Both actors delivered highly praised performances, contributing to the film’s commercial success. It made over $400 million at the box office.
Their second collaboration was in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, release in 2019 to box office profits of $377 million worldwide. DiCaprio took on the role of Rick Dalton, a struggling actor, and Robbie played Sharon Tate, the actress and model tragically murdered by the Manson Family. Although their characters shared minimal screen time together, their performances were standout elements of the critically acclaimed film.
While Margot released Barbie last year, Leo also had a big blockbuster come out, Killers of the Flower Moon, another collab with Scorsese. However, the Titanic alum is apparently frustrated that his film got overshadowed by the hype around Barbie .
“It was especially frustrating after the years of work [they] put into the movie, which got buried and nothing near the credit [Leo] felt it deserved,” the source went on. “So it’s annoying that people are constantly asking him about Barbie.”
The insider added that Leo never expected Margot would be his competition during awards season. “[It’s] something Leo never envisioned while he was fighting to get this movie made,” they explained. “It’s his worst nightmare that Margot, of all people, is behind it.”
Barbie Was Huge For Margot’s Career And Net Worth
Barbie was a huge success and quickly turned into a global phenomenon. It made over $1.4 billion at the box office, and was nominated and won multiple awards, solidifying its successful status.
It was also huge for Margot’s career, both as an actress and producer. Not only did it catapult her to a new level of fame, but it greatly expanded her net worth. Reports said Margot made upwards of $50 million from the film. While she made $12.5 million for the starring role, the rest of the profits come from being a lead producer on the film, suggesting Robbie will continue making a footprint in Hollywood by being both in front and behind the camera.
