Prince Harry and Meghan Markle divorce rumors have surfaced in Vanity Fair just over seven years after she featured in a fawning cover story in the magazine.

The storied publication has turned on her in savage style, running a comprehensive takedown of the couple,

including the claim that a member of Meghan’s team spoke to publishers regarding her writing a book about divorce if she were to split from Harry.

The article, by Anna Peele, has been published to mark the fifth anniversary of Meghan and Harry leaving the British royal family.

It makes the astonishing allegation that “a rumor” has circulated in “the book world” that “Meghan’s team had a conversation with a publishing house to gauge interest” in a book about “a post-Harry divorce.”

Peele says it was clear that the idea was not for “a general book on life after marital dissolution,” nor was it about Meghan’s 2014 divorce from Hollywood producer Trevor Engelson. Peele says that the unidentified person allegedly acting for Meghan made it clear that the couple were not getting divorced, but was seeking to know, if such a divorce did happen, “would this publisher theoretically be interested in a book that took place in its aftermath?”

Adding credibility to the story, a second source says, “If that’s true to any degree, she would have been approached and not vice versa.”

The article says that nothing was ever put on paper and that “no offer was ever made, and no manuscript was produced.”

Harry and Meghan did not comment to Vanity Fair, and did not respond to enquiries from the Daily Beast.

While the article says “everyone” testifies that Harry and Meghan appear to be deeply in love and are “so hot for each other,” it paints a picture of Harry as deeply isolated in his new life in California.

One source, described as “a person who interacted professionally with Meghan” told Vanity Fair that Meghan was “Up-front about the fact that Harry hadn’t made many friends yet.”

Another source, described as having “worked in media projects with the couple” said: “I think Harry doesn’t know what he wants because he grew up in a fishbowl, and so he doesn’t know what real life really is. I think he probably wants to be left alone and be able to go kiss babies every once in a while but not have to worry about money. I don’t think he wants to be famous the way Meghan wants to be famous.”

Another source, described as having “worked with Harry and Meghan” told Vanity Fair: “I don’t want to be like, oh, it’s an Oedipus thing or whatever, but it kind of feels like she’s reparenting him in a way.”

Others who have worked for them have shed new light on the oft-reported difficulties of working for the couple.

One former staffer said, “You don’t tell them no… I left because I couldn’t live with myself anymore.”

Another former staffer is cited as saying that Meghan’s relationships with staff tend to be “warm and effusive” until something goes wrong, at which stage Meghan will become “cold and withholding.”

The source said it was “really, really, really awful. Very painful. Because she’s constantly playing checkers—I’m not even going to say chess—but she’s just very aware of where everybody is on her board. And when you are not in, you are to be thrown to the wolves at any given moment.”

Meghan is accused by the former staffer of “Undermining. It’s talking behind your back. It’s gnawing at your sense of self. Really, like, Mean Girls teenager.”

The source described as having “worked in media projects” with the couple said of stories about Meghan bullying palace aides, “Oh, any given Tuesday this happened.”

The article says that one person “took a leave of absence” after working on three episodes of Meghan’s podcast, and adds that “several others described taking extended breaks from work to escape scrutiny, exiting their job, or undergoing long-term therapy after working with Meghan.”

Meghan is also portrayed as blind to her own failings by a claim that “at least one employee who had a terrible experience got a handwritten thank-you note and gift from Meghan.”

Meghan and Harry also come in for a bashing from locals in their adopted home of Montecito, with one accusing them of “hucksterism,” adding, “they’re the most entitled, disingenuous people on the planet… They moved away from England to get away from the scrutiny of the press, and all they do is try and get in the press in the United States.”
