Olivia Munn is mourning the loss of her close friend and fellow actress, Shannen Doherty, who passed away earlier this month after a years-long cancer battle.
Reflecting on their friendship, Olivia admits Shannen was a big source of support during her own cancer treatment last year.
Posting to her Instagram Story, Olivia wrote, “When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, I remembered how she bravely let the world into her journey and [I] reached out to her.”
Olivia And Shannen Bonded Over Their Cancer Battles
“We became instant friends — which I honestly couldn’t comprehend at times because watching her on [Beverly Hills,] 90210 was everything to me when I was 10,” she continued.
Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, though she only disclosed the news after a successful fight this March. In her post, Olivia said the experience helped her grow close to Shannen.
“We bonded through a shared battle and a desire to help other women. Looking back on the last text she sent me just a couple months ago, she asked how I was doing and if she could do anything for me,” she wrote.
“True to form, Shannen was offering her support even though she was in the final stage of fighting this horrific disease. Cancer is really f—king scary and Shannen faced it with such dignity, strength and grace,” Olivia continued.
Shannen Fought Cancer For Over A Decade
Shannen Doherty is best known for her iconic roles in television series such as Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed. However, in recent years, she has become equally recognized for her courageous battle with cancer. Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015.
She publicly shared her journey, bringing attention to the challenges of living with the disease. Throughout her treatment, which included hormone therapy, mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation, she remained transparent and hopeful, inspiring many with her resilience.
By April 2017, Doherty announced that her cancer was in remission, a moment of relief and celebration for her fans and supporters. Unfortunately, her battle with cancer did not end there. In February 2020, she revealed that her breast cancer had returned and had progressed to stage four, indicating that it had metastasized. Unfortunately, she passed away on July 13.
In addition to her health struggles, Doherty’s personal life has seen its share of highs and lows. She was married three times. Her first marriage was to actor Ashley Hamilton from October 1993 until their divorce in 1994. She then married Rick Salomon in January 2002, but this marriage was annulled after nine months in November 2002.
Her third and final marriage was to photographer Kurt Iswarienko. They tied the knot in October 2011, but were in the process of divorcing before her death amid allegations he had a years-long affair. It remains unclear what’ll happen to her estate.
