Selena Gomez revealed the official title of the new Wizards of Waverly Place spinoff series on Tuesday.
At the ABC and Disney Upfronts event in New York City, the actress, 31, said she was ‘very excited’ to announce the title of the revival show — Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.
‘Sometimes, something magical happens when you do get to go home again,’ she said.
After she took the stage and unveiled the title, Disney shared first look images from the new show, which was previously announced earlier this year in January, on Instagram.
In the photos, Gomez and her former co-star David Henrie were seen reprising their roles as the sibling duo Alex and Justin Russo, respectively.
Back in January, Disney Branded Television issued a pilot order for the new series.
It was revealed that the Love On singer would only be appearing in the show on a guest star basis but will be serving as an executive producer.
In Disney’s post, Gomez and Henrie were also seen posing in a group photo with the new leads and the rest of the cast.
The new series stars Janice LeAnn Brown as Billie Russo, Mimi Gianopulos as Giada Russo, Alkaio Thiele as Roman Russo and Max Matenko as Milo Russo.
According to a synopsis from Disney, the new series will follow ‘an adult Justin Russo, who has chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his family, Giada, Roman and Milo.’
Gomez will reprise her role as Alex when she brings Billie to her brother’s home, seeking his help.
The show then follows Justin as he ‘realizes he must dust off his magical skills to mentor the wizard-in-training while also juggling his everyday responsibilities — and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World.’
The upcoming release of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place comes 12 years after its predecessor concluded its four-season run on Disney Channel.
Gomez and Henrie also starred in the 2009 spinoff film Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.
In 2012, Gomez reprised her role in a TV special titled The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex, which did not include Henrie due to scheduling conflicts with another movie.
A release date for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place has not yet been announced but expected to premiere on Disney Channel and Disney+ later this year.
Wizards of Waverly Place is currently available to stream on Disney+.
