Shannen Doherty’s passing was a huge blow to fans, but the actress knew it was coming and had prepared for it.
She had been battling cancer for a long time, and while she maintained her optimism right until the very end, she also left everything ready to leave this world in the way she intended.
She even had plans for her own funeral.
Something that was seemingly going to be left unresolved was her divorce from her ex-husband Kurt Iswarienko, but surprisingly, she managed to finalize the paperwork literally the day before she died.
The divorce process was long and bitter, but at least Shannen got the last satisfaction of getting it done.
Shannen Doherty Was Able To Finalize Her Divorce Before She Died
There was a lot of speculation on Shannen Doherty’s divorce from ex-husband Kurt Iswarienko. The actress revealed last year that she had found out her ex was cheating on her while she was undergoing cancer treatment, and the divorce took much longer than she expected, which obviously caused her more stress during an already trying time.
However, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Shannen was able to sign the papers finalizing the divorce the day before she died, with Kurt signing them presumably just hours before her passing on July 13.
Legal experts explained to the outlet that because Shannen passed before a judge was able to sign off on the divorce, she was still technically married when she died, but because of what the pair signed, her ex-husband “can’t claim any family support or allowance” and won’t inherit anything.
“It’s a waiver of property. He’s giving up his right to receive anything under her will, and she would be giving up her right to receive anything under his will.”
This is one small victory that Shannen will sadly never get to see but that she fought very hard to achieve.
Shannen Doherty Said Her Husband Was Waiting For Her To Die
Shannen Doherty was heartbroken to be going through a divorce amid everything else she was suffering, but her fight and dignity are inspiring.
In one of the most recent filings, the actress spoke about how the divorce was being unfairly dragged on for longer than it should have and accused her husband of waiting for her to die so he could avoid financial responsibilities.
“It is simply not right that Kurt be permitted to prolong our divorce in hopes that I die before he is required to pay me while he continues to live his life and shirk his responsibilities to his dying wife of more than 11 years,” she said in a devastating document.
“His overt efforts to delay our divorce — by promising to willingly provide information and then failing to do so until served with formal discovery — have caused me tremendous stress and aggravation during an already difficult time. I would like the peace of mind to focus on my health, and no longer wish to engage in Kurt’s sadistic push and pull game .”
She also opened up about how hurt she was by Kurt’s “actions” (presumably his cheating) during their marriage, and how divorce had not been an easy choice. While it shouldn’t have dragged on for as long as it did, it’s a small comfort to know Shannen managed it in the end.
