Simon Cowell is one of the most ambitious figures in the music industry, and he’s responsible for launching the careers of some of the biggest acts, including Kelly Clarkson and One Direction.
It sounds like the producer and television personality still has big plans for his future career, but he’s not taking inspiration from his father.
In a new interview with Hello! Magazine, the music mogul shared that he has no intention of stepping away from the music industry, even as he approaches his 65th birthday.
Simon’s Father Is The Reason He Refuses To Retire
He made a firm declaration that he plans not to retire until the day he dies, as he discussed his future plans and expressed determination to avoid the fate of his own father.
Explaining the deeply personal reason behind his decision to keep working, he revealed that his father, Eric, was forced into retirement due to his job with a large company, which has inspired Simon to continue working for as long as possible.
Reflecting on his own future, Cowell, who has spent four decades in the music industry, stated, “Oh god no, I’ll probably drop dead doing what I’m doing.”
He elaborated further, saying, “As long as I think there’s a need or a purpose and it’s something I can do well, I’m up for it.”
Cowell reminisced about his father Eric, who passed away in 1999 following a heart attack, and how difficult it was for him to stop working despite his sharp mind.
“His brain was still amazing and he could have done that job for another 20 years,” Cowell noted.
Before concluding the interview, the American Idol alum shared some poignant advice his father once gave him: to strive to work for himself if he ever had the opportunity. This wisdom has clearly influenced Cowell’s relentless work ethic and his commitment to remain active in his career for as long as he is able, despite now being a father at age 64.
Simon Plans To Remain On T.V For Many Years
Based on Cowell’s comments, it seems the music executive plans to keep doing what he’s doing for many years to come, which means fans will likely continue to see his famous personality lighting up their television screens. Simon is best known for his sharp critiques and blunt honesty as a judge on popular talent shows such as American Idol, The X Factor, and Britain’s Got Talent.
Beyond his on-screen persona, Cowell is a highly successful music executive. He founded Syco Entertainment, a global joint venture with Sony Music, through which he has produced numerous hit records and television formats.
Cowell has a son named Eric, born in 2014, with his partner Lauren Silverman. The couple’s relationship has been in the public eye since it began (mainly because Lauren wasn’t officially divorced when they got together), and Cowell has often spoken fondly of his son, whom he named after his late father.
