Scarlett Johansson probably knew what she was getting into when she married a comedian, but fans were still stunned when they heard Colin Jost’s joke about his wife on Saturday Night Live.
To be fair, he didn’t come up with it himself.
He read it during the Weekend Update, which he does alongside Michael Che, and where they write jokes for each other and make the other read them live.
Still, the joke caused a lot of impact, and the comedian looked mortified after saying it.
Scarlett Johansson is usually the punchline to a lot of his jokes, but this one seemed particularly offensive, as it implied that all the actress had to offer was her good looks.
Colin Jost Was Made To Read Offensive Joke About Scarlett Johansson
Colin Jost’s Saturday Night Live joke might cause some trouble in his marriage to Marvel superstar Scarlett Johansson. The comedian was doing the joke swap segment with Michael Che, and was made to read a controversial joke about the actress which stunned the audience, although he apparently found it hilarious.
“ChatGPT has released a new voice assistant feature inspired by Scarlett Johansson’s AI character in Her,” the joke began. “Which I’ve never bothered to watch, because without that body, what’s the point of listening?” A guest in the show, a rabbi named Jill, whom Michael Che had invited for some of his jokes, gave them both a disapproving look, while Colin Jost buried his face in his hands in embarrassment.
It doesn’t sound as though any of them meant any harm, but the joke was certainly controversial, not only because of the sexist message behind it but because he was laughing at his wife’s expense.
Still, the segment moved on, and Colin was able to get back at his friend by making him declare war on Kendrick Lamar. Michael Che looked genuinely worried about it and said that he didn’t “like that one bit.”
This Was Not The First Time Colin Jost Made Jokes About Scarlett Johansson
While Colin Jost looked embarrassed after his joke about Scarlett Johansson, it seems making jokes about his famous wife is not that unusual for him. The comedian recently spoke at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and closed the night with a suggestive joke about his wife.
“I wanted to thank my family and I wanted to thank my friends for being here tonight to support me. I want to thank my wife for enduring lots of jokes, and for agreeing to individually meet everyone in this room right after the ceremony,” he said, putting Scarlett on blast.
He also spoke directly to Kamala Harris’ husband, Douglas Emhoff, saying “Doug, as you can tell from all the comments about my wife, I’m also used to being the second gentleman.”
While she clearly doesn’t mind being made fun of, otherwise she would have told her husband to stop, Scarlett Johansson admits that she always gets nervous before Colin Jost’s comedy routines, especially when she’s watching him on Saturday Night Live.
“I now rarely watch without having a sense of… not overwhelming panic, just like a slight underwhelming panic, because I just feel like at any moment something’s going to fall apart,” she shared on the Kelly Clarkson show.
