Suri Cruise was seen for the first time amid reports she’s dropped her famous father Tom Cruise’s last name, and the teenager looked less-than-impressed with the photographers trying to capture her moves.
Earlier this week, the 18-year old was spotted heading to dinner with her mother, Katie Holmes, 45. The two appeared to be deep in a serious conversation as they walked, their expressions notably somber.
Katie And Suri Looked Tense During A Recent Outing
Suri showcased her slender and tall figure in a pair of loose, low-rise jeans paired with a white cropped graphic t-shirt. Her outfit was completed with brown Birkenstock shoes and a matching oversized denim jacket. She wore her brunette hair tied back and opted for a natural look with minimal makeup for the evening.
Katie, on the other hand, opted for a slightly more polished ensemble. She wore high-waisted jeans, a camel-colored turtleneck, and black booties. To accessorize, she added black sunglasses, a long cream trench coat, and carried a tote bag.
Throughout their walk to the restaurant, both Katie and Suri seemed troubled, exchanging brief and seemingly tense words. The mother and daughter duo, looking away from each other, shared no smiles during their outing, maintaining their serious demeanors as they made their way to and from their dinner destination.
Why Fans Think Suri Dropped Tom’s Last Name
The mother-daughter sighting comes days after a casting sheet reveals that Suri is going by the name “Suri Noelle.” She’s currently performing in Head Over Heels on Broadway. Not only has she seemingly dropped the surname Cruise, but she adopted her mother Katie’s middle name.
It may have been a way to detract attention from her famous parents as she tries to make a name for herself in the entertainment industry, as even Katie’s last name Holmes would bring Suri recognition just like Cruise does.
Last year, Suri appeared to be stepping into the world of acting, much like her famous parents, by making her debut in her high school’s production of “The Addams Family: A New Musical,” where she played the role of Morticia Addams.
Her biography for the play highlighted numerous teachers and fellow students, yet notably did not mention either of her parents, fueling the theory she’s trying to create distance so she can forge a name in the entertainment industry herself (without relying on nepotism).
But it isn’t surprising that Suri chose not to reference her father, Tom Cruise. Reports suggest that the two have been estranged for nearly a decade, ever since Tom and Katie Holmes divorced in 2012. Following their separation, Tom reportedly didn’t challenge Katie’s request for full custody of Suri, although he did agree to provide child support, which has apparently come to an end now that Suri is a legal adult.
While there have been rumblings Tom may want to make contact with his youngest daughter, Suri’s decision to let go of his last name may be a sign she doesn’t feel the same way.
