When talking about his time working on Top Gun: Maverick, Glen Powell had only good things to say. Well, almost.
There was one incident that stood out, one that he won’t soon forget because he honestly thought he was going to die. This didn’t happen during a shoot, but during an intimate moment with Tom Cruise in their then-new friendship.
The star of the movie was flying him home in his helicopter when the idea of a dangerous prank occurred to him.
It scared Glen Powell out of his mind, but it didn’t deter his admiration and affection for Tom Cruise, and it certainly didn’t stop a beautiful friendship from blooming.
Tom Cruise Pranked Glen Powell Making Him Think He Was Going To Die
Glen Powell had very nice things to say about Tom Cruise and the experience of working with him, but there was one not-so-nice moment that he will always remember. Because he feared for his life. The Mission Impossible actor is a known prankster, and while he didn’t harm Glen Powell in this prank, he certainly scared him.
He and Tom Cruise became good friends over the course of filming Top Gun: Maverick, and when sharing anecdotes of their friendship, this particular moment came to mind when Glen Powell was doing an interview with British GQ.
There was one time when Tom Cruise was flying him back to London from a Top Gun: Maverick reshoot at Pinewood in his helicopter. During the trip, the actor had an idea. All at once, he started dropping the helicopter and pretended that they were about to go down.
“Tom goes ‘oh no, oh no,’ and he starts dropping the helicopter over London,” Glen Powell shared. During those few moments, the actor was sure he was going to die. “I was like, ‘Am I about to be the unnamed guy that dies with Tom in a smoking hole in the middle of London?'”
That was not the case, thankfully. Tom Cruise quickly stabilized the helicopter and revealed he was pranking him, but Glen will not forget that moment any time soon.
Glen Powell Gushed Over Tom Cruise
Despite this terrifying experience, Glen Powell truly has nothing but good memories of working with Tom Cruise. His admiration and love for the movie star is evident every time he talks about him, and he recently shared some details about how the two of them became friends, which was a dream come true for him.
“The one thing I feel we’re kindred spirits in is he’s obsessed with movies. That was our love language on set. I got to watch a guy who knew every department. He was able to clearly interface with everyone, and be so friendly and respectful and be able to communicate that vision,” Glen Powell gushed.
The actor also really admires Tom Cruise’s work ethic and revealed that, despite having a lot more experience and being in a position of power, he allowed him to share his ideas for his character and really took them into consideration.
“What we were talking about is, how can Hangman service the story and give the flavor of the original Top Gun that you need? I said my piece to Tom about what I do and what I do well, and he listened,” he explained. Apparently, he wasn’t an exception but the rule. “Tom’s a listener. He listens to the crew members, he listens to his collaborators, and he hears people.”
One distasteful prank aside, it’s clear the two actors share a very wholesome and important friendship, and it would be great to see them share the screen again soon.
